GARDEN CITY - A makeshift animal shelter currently housing 200 pets displaced by Sandy is beginning a search for foster homes.

The furry friends are being kept in a converted gym in Garden City. Jo Ellen Cimmino, of the Pet Safe Coalition, says many pet owners affected by Sandy aren't ready to take their pets back, so the shelter is helping find temporary quarters for the animals.
Cimmino says anyone willing to take in the pets can contact the coalition and fill out an application. However, no animal will be sent off without the owner's consent.
The Pet Safe Coalition says it's expected to have the foster program in place by mid-week, after the shelter gets approval from the county.
