MINEOLA - The trial for a former New York Yankee accused of sexually abusing two 8-year-old girls began in Mineola Wednesday.
As News 12 has reported, former Yankees outfielder Rusty Torres is accused of inappropriately touching two girls while he coached baseball at the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County.
During opening statements, the district attorney claimed Torres would intentionally bump up against these two girls and in one case, took a girl into a Town of Oyster Bay van behind the school and exposed himself. The assistant district attorney alleges the abuse began in 2008 and continued until 2012.
The prosecution began calling witnesses, including one alleged victim's mother.
Torres' attorney claims police led one alleged victim to believe there was abuse when there wasn't. He says he still hasn’t decided on whether his client will take the stand in his own defense. He expects the trial to last two weeks.
