Setauket man arrested in hit-and-run that killed student

Police say a Setauket man was driving high on drugs when he hit and killed a Stony Brook University student on his bicycle last night.

SETAUKET - Police say a Setauket man was driving high on drugs when he hit and killed a Stony Brook University student on his bicycle last night.

Police say Michael Tarduno, Jr., 30, crashed into 21-year-old Seong Hoon Beck, of Flushing, at the intersection of Route 347 near Pond Path, and took off. The victim later died at the hospital.

This morning, Tarduno acted like he had no idea he allegedly hit and killed someone. The 30-year-old said he thought he hit a guard rail, not a person, and denied driving on drugs.

Officials say witnesses who saw the crash last night wrote down the license plate of his car and reported it to police. Police arrested Tarduno at 1 a.m. According to investigators, prescription pills were found inside the suspect's car.

Tarduno was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, driving while impaired and possession of a controlled substance.

Meanwhile, Stony Brook University is investigating the safety of roads around the campus.
