EAST SETAUKET - The Setauket Fire Department is hoping to expand its firehouse, but the plans could hit a snag with taxpayers.

The firehouse was built in 1935 and has been renovated a few times. Fire officials say the firehouse is too old and too small, making it difficult to store firetrucks and equipment properly.

The $14.9 million proposal calls for a combination of renovation and new construction. If approved, taxpayers within the fire district would pay an average of $94 a year for the next 25 years.

Two other plans were voted down overwhelmingly, with the community complaining they were left out of the process. A public vote on the expansion plan is scheduled for June 17.
