BROOKHAVEN - An East Setauket family with a keen interest in the weather was honored today at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The Strong family has reported on weather conditions every day since 1885. William Brewster Strong says weather observing is a cherished tradition that he's taken part in since he was a little boy. The family was given a certificate and a tour of the lab, and William Strong's wife and son were on hand to launch a weather balloon at the lab's National Weather Service Forecast Office. The climatology feeds that the Strongs provide help researchers gain valuable insight into the region's weather, observation program officials say.

Strong says his 19-year-old son plans to carry on the tradition.
