WOODBURY - Big cuts could be coming to the federal food stamp program.

The farm bill, passed today by a Senate committee, includes a cut of $4 billion to the food stamp program.

Advocates for the needy say that food stamp usage on Long Island has increased more in the last two years than at any other time in history. More than 180,000 Long Islanders receive food stamps.

The measure is expected to go before the full Senate next week.
