OLD WESTBURY - U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) joined the Nassau police union today to call for a road-safety audit looking into unsafe shoulders on the Long Island Expressway in Nassau County.
Nassau County PBA President James Carver says the shoulders on the highway are just too narrow, such as a stretch between exit 39 and 40 known as "the valley" because of the poor lighting and narrow shoulder.
The issue of highway shoulders on Long Island has received extra attention lately after officer Michael Califano was killed during a routine traffic stop on the Long Island Expressway in Old Westbury. As News 12 Long Island has reported, police say a truck driver fell asleep at the wheel and slammed into Califano's cruiser.
