NORTH AMITYVILLE - Dozens of homeless veterans may be moving into their own apartments in North Amityville.
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) is calling on the federal government to transfer a former Army Reserve base to the Town of Babylon for an affordable housing project.
Schumer says 60 veterans and their families could live in apartments on the North Amityville property once the complex is built.
To retain a $12 million incentive, however, the senator says the Department of Defense and Department of Housing and Urban Development must transfer the land before July 31.
If the exchange is approved, construction would start before August.
