WOODBURY - Sen. Charles Schumer is calling on federal safety officials to strengthen safety standards for limousines.

The push comes in the wake of the Cutchogue limousine crash that killed four young women and injured four others as the group wrapped up an East End winery trip.

Making limousines involves a process known as stretching. Schumer says that after a vehicle is stretched, its frame is no longer structurally sound.

The senator is calling on safety officials to issue new safety regulations for limos and other modified cars.

Another serious crash involving a limousine was reported on the West Coast on Sunday. Deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department say 11 people were injured, five of them critically, in a crash involving a limousine and two other cars.
