Selden man gets up to 9 years for crash that killed 2 teens

RIVERHEAD - A Selden man who admitted to causing a crash that killed two teenagers was sentenced today to six-and-a-third to nine years in prison.

Police say David Heise, 29, ran a red light in Ronkonkoma last April, slamming into a car carrying 17-year-old Eugene Franjola and 16-year-old Stephen Massina.

Franjola, of Oakdale, and Massina, of Sayville, were both killed in the crash.

Heise originally cut a plea deal with the prosecutors, but it was voided days later when Heise was arrested on drug charges in May. He was then sent back to jail, where he allegedly swallowed a balloon filled with prescription pills.

Prior to his sentencing today, Heise read a statement saying he takes full responsibility for his actions. He also asked the victims' families to forgive him.

However, outside the courtroom, Heise's mother, Virginia, presented what she said was an autopsy report from the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office. She claims the report shows that Franjola had drugs in his system at the time of the crash.

Franjola's mother, Barbara, said her son and his friend were not the ones on trial.
