Search is on for suspects after cruiser crash on Southern State

AMITYVILLE - The eastbound Southern State Parkway was closed for hours today near exit 32 due to an accident following a police pursuit that ended with a crash in Amityville.

State police say a Nassau County cop crashed on the border of Nassau and Suffolk counties under the Route 110 bridge.

The female officer is in critical but stable condition after pursuing two suspects, who are still at large. She was airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center. Officials have not released the officer's identity but say she has been on the force since 1992.

Police say the chase began at about noon in Massapequa, after a resident there reported seeing two men acting suspiciously.

Nassau Detective Lt. Kevin Smith says the two men were seen "actually changing plates on the car-- I believe from Pennsylvania to possibly Florida plates."

Police later released photos of the two suspects in a newer gray, 4-door Honda Accord. In the photos, the car was missing a front license plate and appeared to have a Florida plate in the back.Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-224-TIPS.
