WOODBURY - ? Officials are working on a new plan that would keep homeowners on Long Island from being forced to buy flood insurance if they do not need it. FEMA?s 2009 flood maps show which homeowners must buy flood insurance.

However, officials say hundreds of Nassau residents have challenged the maps, saying their neighborhood never floods. Now, Sen. Charles Schumer introduced a bill that forces FEMA to ?go back to the drawing board.?The bill would have FEMA come up with flood maps that are ?fair and accurate.?
