Schumer announces deal to improve East River tunnels

Sen. Schumer says many residents in Nassau and Suffolk counties have had a tough go over the last year because of track troubles.

WOODBURY - Sen. Charles Schumer has announced a major deal to improve conditions of the East River tunnels.

The plan would replace rails, more frequent inspections and new maintenance protocols.

Schumer says many residents in Nassau and Suffolk counties have had a tough go over the last year because of track troubles.

The cost of the project will largely be funded by Sandy Relief money.

The final cost and timeline for the plan is still being negotiated.
