ROCKVILLE CENTRE - School districts and towns are breathing a big sigh of relief after a court ruling that would require Nassau County to pick up the bill for all property tax refunds.
For every dollar of property taxes paid, 60 cents goes to the taxpayer’s school district, 20 cents to the town and 20 cents to the county. County Executive Ed Mangano (R-Nassau) wanted the refunds to be divided based upon how much was paid to each entity. The ruling now requires the county to pick up the entire bill.
For Rockville Centre, the school district could have been on the hook for $10 million, a move that Rockville Centre Superintendent William Johnson says would have had a devastating effect on the school district.
The county says it plans to appeal the ruling.
