SOUTHAMPTON - The school year may have just started, but some students in Southampton are already ditching their books.

Students are now using iPad tablet computers instead of books and paper as the district considers ways to try and save money by using technology.

As part of a test, sixth-graders in the Southampton School District were all given brand-new iPads programmed with electronic textbooks to replace some of their physical texts.

The district says parents are also playing a big role in the use of the iPads and had to sign off on the new program.
