FARMINGDALE - A tentative contract agreement has averted a potential school bus driver strike on Long Island.

Leaders of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 1205 and Baumann & Sons Buses jointly announced the preliminary deal Monday night. Union members still have to vote on its approval.

A possible strike Monday was called off after both sides resumed talking. Drivers had initially approved the strike on Saturday.

The agreement avoids a work stoppage that could have affected about 15,000 students in the Northport, Commack and Middle Country school districts.

Since May, the company that operates Baumann & Sons Buses and some subsidiaries had been going back and forth with union representatives over pay, benefits and work conditions.

The union agreed that its bargaining committee will recommend ratification of the tentative agreement to its membership in advance of a vote scheduled for later this week.
