Prosecutors say Beodeker was taking Ambien, amphetamines and methamphetamine when he fatally struck two men. (March 15, 2013)

HEMPSTEAD - A driver accused of killing two men on the Meadowbrook Parkway is facing serious new charges.

Robert Beodeker was originally charged with reckless and unlicensed driving. Today, he faced charges of vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and driving while impaired by drugs.

Prosecutors say Beodeker was taking Ambien, amphetamines and methamphetamine when he fatally struck 76-year-old John Elder and 65-year-old Edward Ross on March 4.

Authorities say Elder had pulled over due to engine trouble, and Ross came to help. Police say Beodeker slammed into them, killing them both.

Beodeker's lawyer says he has been an associate dean of students at Suffolk Community College for the past 20 years and is newly divorced with three children.

Beodeker is being held on $1 million bail and will be back in court next week. He has been suspended from his job at Suffolk Community College.
