Scare in the sky: Pilot injured by laser pointed from ground

WOODBURY - A JetBlue pilot suffered an eye injury while at the helm of an 80-passenger flight after someone on the ground apparently flashed a laser into the cockpit. The pilot radioed a nearby control center to report two green flashes that were fired into the cockpit from somewhere in the Deer Park area. The nighttime flight from Syracuse was able to land safely at John F. Kennedy International Airport, and none of the passengers were hurt. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says the number of laser incidents has skyrocketed in the past five years. There were nearly 3,600 incidents reported last year alone, the agency says. The FAA says it is investigating the incident. Interfering with a flight crew is considered a federal crime.
