STONY BROOK - Hundreds of employees at Stony Brook University Medical Center (SBUMC) have been warned that they may be laid off if Gov. Andrew Cuomo's (D-N.Y.) proposed budget goes through.

The hospital is at risk of losing nearly $55 million in operating expenses. SBUMC officials say that figure is equivalent to 700 jobs in the facility.

Janet Helf, of Centereach, brings her husband to the hospital every other month for treatments relating to his liver cancer. She fears that cutting staff would result in delayed treatments.

A hospital spokesperson told News 12 Long Island they'll wait for the budget to be approved before saying exactly what cuts to staff and programs would be made.
