CORAM - A salt shortage in some Suffolk County towns could create a potential problem on icy roads.

In Brookhaven, town crews are mixing the small amount of salt they have with sand. Deputy Highways Superintendent Steve Tricarico says they have to work with what they have.

“We need to mix our sand sometimes - 4, 5 or 6 to 1 - just to make sure we can get material on the ground, and make that road safe for our constituents,” said Tricarico.

Tricarico says Brookhaven's 12 salt sheds have enough product to get through Thursday’s storm.

The towns of Riverhead and Southold report the same issue. They use the same salt supplier that Brookhaven does, and they too say the salt isn't getting to them fast enough. They say salt was ordered well in advance, but has yet to arrive. A Riverhead official told News 12 that the town may not even be able to pretreat the roads because of the shortage.

The supplier, Atlantic Salt of Staten Island, has not returned News 12’s calls, but Tricarico says the company has asked him to have patience.

Town officials say they do expect a shipment to come Thursday morning.
