HAUPPAUGE - County Executive Ed Mangano (R-Nassau) is calling out a top executive at a Long Island nonprofit for what he says is an excessive, taxpayer-funded pay package. At issue are the salary and perks being paid to Dr. Gail Barouh, the top executive at the Long Island Association for AIDS Care, who Mangano says is making $363,000 a year. Barouh says the charity's Board of Directors determines her salary, comparing it to what other CEOs for nonprofits make. Mangano recently slashed critical funding to the charity's HIV/AIDS hotline services due to county budget cuts. Barouh says she was warned by Mangano's office not to complain, but did anyway. Mangano admits he had his staff research her salary. "We cut back a little, she complained, we looked into it and we found this outrageous abuse of taxpayer dollars," Mangano says.
