HOLTSVILLE - Officials say a young man was hit and killed when his SUV ran out of gas on the expressway last night.

According to police, Ryan Marshall, 24, was on the Long Island Expressway just before 8 p.m. in Holtsville when his SUV ran out of gas.

Police say it appears Marshall tried to cross the eastbound lanes to reach a highway cop.

Marshall was hit by a DSS minivan in the HOV lanes and died. The woman driving was not hurt and stayed at the scene. There are no charges against the driver.

Officials say if you have a problem with your vehicle you should stay in your car and wait for help.
