HEMPSTEAD - ? Fire officials say a row of stores were damaged by flames in the Village of Hempstead. The fire started just after midnight at the corner of Fulton Avenue and Washington Street. According to officials, about 60 firefighters put the fire out in minutes, but the flames damaged the ?69 cent store.?In addition, there was smoke damage to a half dozen adjoining businesses. The fire is under investigation, but the cause appears to be electrical.
