SHIRLEY - The beaches at Smith Point County Park are closed for swimming due to life-threatening rip currents and erosion concerns.

News 12 Long Island’s Erin Colton caught up with Long Islanders this morning who headed to the beach to get a look at what Hermine had to offer.

Long Island was never expected to get a direct hit from the storm, but Hermine is still expected to stall for several days off the coast, and as it churns its bands could lash Long Island's coast.

Suffolk County has since lifted the voluntary evacuation of Fire Island. According to officials, although a tropical storm warning remains in effect from Fire Island to Port Jefferson Harbor, the storm surge warning has been lifted.

Officials say portions of the coastline could still experience a one to two foot storm surge.  However, winds will not be a significant factor.
