ROCKVILLE CENTRE - A paddleboarder stranded at sea was rescued a mile off-shore yesterday.

Brian Hopkins, of Rockville Centre, says he's grateful to be alive today. Yesterday, the 32-year-old paddleboarder found himself stranded in the Atlantic Ocean about a mile from shore and a half-mile from the Fire Island lighthouse when the wind picked up.

Thankfully, Hopkins had his cell phone on him and called for help.

Suffolk Police Aviation, the Marine Bureau and the Coast Guard responded.

Hopkins, who has been paddleboarding and surfing for nearly 10 years, was not wearing a life jacket.
