RIVERHEAD - A plan to bring a sober home to Main Street in Riverhead is not sitting well with some residents.

Mainstream LLC wants to turn 755 E. Main St. into a sober home. The company is requesting a special permit from the town.

Mainstream would house about a dozen recovering addicts and would be located across from Riverhead Town Hall.

Some neighbors are objecting to the plan, saying Mainstream already owns five similar facilities elsewhere in Riverhead.

Mainstream's founder Robert Hartmann is a former potato farmer who once struggled with his own addiction to alcohol and pills. Hartman says downtown Riverhead is the ideal location for a new sober home.

"Riverhead is so conducive to a recovering person, simply because of all the town, county, state and federal services available,” said Hartmann. “Everything is within walking distance."

The town board will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, Feb. 4 regarding the special permit Mainstream must acquire. The board is likely to vote by March.
