RIVERHEAD - The Riverhead man who was hailed as a hero for pulling a woman from a burning car this past November was found dead in his apartment Monday.

The relatives of John Cassidy say he had been battling drug addiction since he was a teen. They are still waiting for toxicology reports for the cause of death.

"He battled with an addiction, but all his clean moments were like a million dollars to him," says Don Baglivi, Cassidy's brother.

Cassidy's fiancée, Alexis Oliveri, says the 32-year-old was in a sober house and they were looking forward to getting married and becoming parents to a baby boy this summer.

"I'm going to tell my son that he was gentle, beautiful, caring, just a loving spirit," Olivieri says.

Olivieri adds that she plans to name their child "John," in memory of his father.
