RIVERHEAD - The Riverhead Foundation rescued a distressed baby seal from Atlantic Beach yesterday.

Kim Durham, of the Riverhead Foundation, says the organization received several calls about Penny, the 5-day-old harbor seal pup. Durham says she doesn't know if the pup was abandoned or if the mother wasn't coming back for the pup because of the large number of people surrounding her.

Penny is about 23 pounds and 2.5 feet long. Her umbilical cord is still attached.

The Riverhead Foundation is tube-feeding her formula and plans to limit her contact with humans so that she can be released back into the wild.
