MINEOLA - Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice has declared victory over Nassau Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams in the Democratic primary for the 4th Congressional District.

She hopes to succeed retiring nine-term Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D – Mineola), who endorsed Rice’s campaign.

Rice, who was a heavy underdog in her victory in the 2005 district attorney's race, was re-elected in 2009 and 2013.

In her victory speech, Rice said she wants to fight in Congress for gun control legislation and to make college more affordable.

Bruce Blakeman declared victory in the 4th Congressional District Republican primary. Lee Zeldin and Gregory Meeks won their primaries.
