HEMPSTEAD - ? A retired Hempstead police detective is accused of keeping a stolen gun in his home and lying about it.

William Fowlkes, 47, of Long Beach, pleaded not guilty yesterday.

The DA?s office says police found four unregistered guns in his house. Prosecutors say one was taken from a suspect in 2001 and never turned in as evidence.

If convicted, Fowlkes faces up to four years in prison.

In May, Fowlkes pleaded guilty to several charges in connection with the beating of his wife.
