WOODBURY - The resignation of Nassau Police Commissioner Thomas Dale comes after a string of issues plagued the police department.
It was believed that Dale would be the man to set things straight. Nassau Legislature voted to expand his powers giving him the authority to discipline officers.
Dale abruptly stepped down Thursday after prosecutors released the findings of an investigation into possible witness intimidation by Dale and some of his officers.
Dale was hired after the county closed its crime lab in 2011 due to concerns over how evidence was handled.
His hiring came after the shooting of a cab driver by an off duty Nassau cop, the details of which were later leaked.
Nassau County PBA President James Carver says he hopes the next commissioner is someone who will raise the morale of the officers.
Attorney Fred Brewington suggests that the county choose a successor who is an outsider of the force with ties to the community.
