Residents: Troubles in river may have caused kayaking death

SMITHTOWN - Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the kayaking accident that killed an NYPD police officer from Smithtown, but residents speculate a problem in the water may be to blame for the tragedy.

Rob Tobin, who goes out on the water in Smithtown Bay several times a week with his young daughter, says the area at the mouth of the Nissequogue River can be very dangerous and could have played a role in the death of Patrick Luca.

"It's just very rough, moves very quick," he says. "If you don't know how to drive a boat here, you're going to crash a boat into the side of the dock."

Luca, a 21-year veteran of the NYPD, was apparently a good swimmer and the weather was calm when he set out with his son for a day on the water.
