A 30,000 gallon propane tank started leaking early Saturday morning near Kohl?s department store on Montauk Highway forcing the evacuation of homes and businesses.

The evacuation was ordered due to the high flammability of the gas. Electricity to the area was also turned off as a precaution.

While power has been restored and people have been allowed to return, things are not back to normal. The Stop & Shop grocery store says it lost all its perishable foods and will have to restock large amounts of food.

Officials with the Town of Brookhaven and Suffolk County are continuing to investigate the cause of the leak.
