GLEN COVE - Residents on Wednesday rallied outside a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a proposed housing project in Glen Cove.

As News 12 has reported, the $1 billion Garvies Point development project includes 1,100 housing units, shops, restaurants and parks. On Wednesday, developer Scott Rechler and company opened a welcome center, which will be open to the public.

Despite what the developers and supporters tout of the project, protesters oppose the idea.

Sea Cliff Mayor Bruce Kennedy joined protesters from Glen Cove and the surrounding area. They insist their opposition goes beyond the "not in my backyard" mentality as their concerns include light, air and noise pollution in addition to increased traffic.

But while the protesters remain steadfast in their displeasure with the plan, Glen Cove Mayor Reginald Spinello says he hopes they change their mind.

Rechler says the project's amenities will be completed in 18 months to two years. The entire project would take up to 10 years to finish.
