ISLIP - Suffolk County officials are urging residents to take Hurricane Irene seriously and to seek shelter as the storm nears.
A mandatory evacuation was ordered for some areas on Suffolk County's South Shore today, as well as the Cedar Beach Peninsula in Mount Sinai by 8 a.m. Saturday.
In the Town of Islip, officials issued a mandatory evacuation of the mainland today. Town of Islip Supervisor Phil Nolan says there is a meeting tomorrow morning to discuss whether further evacuations are necessary.
In the Town of Brookhaven, Supervisor Mark Lesko issued a mandatory evacuation for Blue Point south of Montauk Highway, Patchogue south of Main Street, East Patchogue south of Main Street and east to the intersection of South Country Road, as well as south of South Country Road, Bellport south of South Country Road and Hamlet of Brookhaven south of South Country Road.
Also included in the evacuations are Shirley south of Golden Gate/Neighborhood Road, Mastic Beach Village, Moriches south of Main Street, Center Moriches south of Main Street, East Moriches south of East Moriches Boulevard, Newport Beach Community and Cedar Beach Peninsula, Mt. Sinai and Miller Place west of Landing Road and north of Harbor Beach Road effective at 8 a.m. Saturday.
There is also a voluntary evacuation of all other North Shore waterfront.
