MANHATTAN - ? The request for Palestinian independence is set to go before the UN Security Council today. Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas got a hero?s welcome in the West Bank after calling for recognition.

The U.N. is not expected to give Abbas the nine votes needed for approval, but his bid for independence has increased his popularity in the country. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he welcomes peace talks.

However, Netanyahu has rejected calls for halting construction of Jewish settlements. Long Islanders mixed on Palestinian statehood bid at U.N.
