WOODBURY - The replacement of the Affordable Care Act could impact many Long Islanders.

Susana Armentia, a community organizer in Glen Cove, says she relies on Medicaid for health insurance. Republicans want to stop enrollment in a Medicaid expansion program as of 2020. People like Armentia make too much money for regular Medicaid but not enough to pay for coverage on their own.

"I'm really hoping and praying that they reconsider this," she says.

Jason Samel, an insurance broker who helps enroll Long Island residents in coverage plans, says phasing out the expansion programs for new enrollees could have a drastic impact.

"Only people who are under $10,000 a year are going to potentially be able to get Medicaid, which is probably going to hurt about 10 million Americans in my opinion," says Samel.

Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) says as of now, he is not in favor of the proposal.

"I'm looking at it from a New York perspective…I'm certainly not supporting it as it is now. I'm still heavily involved in negotiations. I want to see about Medicaid expansion and how the tax credits work out. This is day one," he told News 12.
