MASSAPEQUA - A new government report found that one in every six American kids are being diagnosed with a developmental disability, a 17-percent increase over the past decade.

The government study, published in the Journal of Pediatrics, looked at disorders from Autism and Cerebral Palsy to ADHD and other learning disabilities. It found that about 10 million children are affected.

At the Development Disabilities Institute on Long Island, Director Daniel Rowland says that while no one knows what causes the disabilities, diagnoses procedures are more fine-tuned than they were several years ago. He also stresses the importance of family awareness.
