WOODBURY - A new report says that alcohol intoxication poisoning has killed hundreds of people on Long Island over the past several years.

Newsday analyzed death records from Nassau and Suffolk counties and found that there were at least 354 alcohol intoxication deaths from 2010 to 2014. The tally for 2014 has not been finalized and could grow due to pending autopsy results.

Local experts call the number "alarmingly high," and say binge drinking is a hidden epidemic.

Officials say binge drinking is the leading cause of alcohol poisoning, which can shut down parts of the brain that control breathing, heart rate and body temperature.
