HEMPSTEAD - A new report claims certain communities may be suffering more from the foreclosure crisis because of bank policies.

The Empire Justice Center found people in communities like Hempstead, Roosevelt, Wyandanch and Central Islip are being denied conventional mortgages at higher rates than other areas.

Researchers say many residents were only able to get higher-priced government-backed loans.

The group hopes more state and local funding will go toward the nonprofit organizations that help people afford homes.
