OLD BETHPAGE - An Old Bethpage woman in need of a kidney transplant is at odds with the U.S. government over its refusal to grant a visa to her Filipino donor.

Esther Slubski, 75, is battling end-stage renal disease and desperately needs a transplant to survive. A family friend in the Philippines, Caroline Dela Cruz, is a perfect match, but has been denied a visa four times.

Slubski's son says Dela Cruz's visa requests were rejected even though immigration officials knew his mother's life was in danger.

The family has since reached out to Rep. Steve Israel, who has applied for Humanitarian Parole to get Dela Cruz into the U.S. temporarily given the emergency circumstances.

The approval process may take up to two weeks.

News 12 reached out to United States Citizenship and Immigration Services to find out why Dela Cruz was denied a visa, but has not heard back.
