PORT WASHINGTON - Rep. Steve Israel is proposing legislation to help middle-class families handle the rising costs of college tuition.

Israel wants to expand the American Opportunity tax credit from $2,500 to $5,000 per student. Income limits for eligibility would be raised to $160,000 for single parents and $320,000 for couples.

Israel announced his bill today at LIU Post.

He says it will be the first bill he introduces when Congress returns to session in two weeks.
