DIX HILLS - Rep. Steve Israel (D-3rd District) is proposing legislation that will exempt the terminally ill from having to wait five months for Social Security disability benefits.

Israel announced the legislation with a terminally ill Dix Hills resident at his side, who was forced to wait for benefits. Susan Young was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in October. The doctors told the 64-year-old that she had less than a year to live.

Young was forced to stop working and she applied for Social Security disability. While she was quickly approved for the benefits, the mother of two was told she'd have to wait five months before receiving her first payment. The wait is a requirement of the program.

Israel is planning on introducing the bill when Congress returns from break in the next few weeks.
