WOODBURY - Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola) has formally introduced new gun control legislation in the House this afternoon.

The legislation would ban gun clips that carry more than 10 bullets each at the federal level. Clips over 10 bullets are currently banned at the state level in New York.

The legislation was introduced in the wake of the shooting in Arizona that killed six people and seriously injured Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ).

The alleged shooter, Jared Lee Loughner, was purported to be carrying two 31-round clips with him at the time of the shooting.

McCarthy is a noted gun-control advocate after her husband and five others were killed when a gunman with a 15-round clip opened fire on the Long Island Rail Road in 1993.
