Rep. Israel proposes plan to help jobless veterans

Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington) is calling on the U.S. Congress to pass a veterans' job package that would help servicemen and women returning from Iraq

BAY SHORE - Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington) is calling on the U.S. Congress to pass a veterans' job package that would help servicemen and women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan find employment.

Unemployment rate for post-Sept. 11 veterans currently stands at 13 percent, which is higher than the national average. Israel says his plan would include tax credits for businesses that hire veterans and job assistance from the Veterans' Administration.

The money needed to fund the proposed legislation would initially come from the federal budget, but Israel says it will pay for itself once employed veterans pay their income taxes.
