Recent heavy snow, ice put Long Island homes at risk for roof collapses

Police say the collapse occurred around 2 a.m. at a warehouse for an electronics recycling company along Eastern Parkway. No one was inside the building at the time. (2/14/14)

FARMINGDALE - The recent heavy snow and ice are putting Long Island homes at risk for roof collapses.

Experts say the weight of a foot of snow and ice on an average roof could weigh as much as 4 tons.

Last night’s snow is being blamed for a roof collapse at a Farmingdale electronic recycling company’s warehouse. The weight of the snow also pulled down the façade of the World Gym Building in Setauket.
