MINEOLA - Today was the first full day of court proceedings in the rape trial of a former Nassau corrections officer. Mark Barber is accused of forcing six female inmates to have sex with him in exchange for favors at the Nassau County Jail between 2007 and 2009. Prosecutors say Barber offered the women jail privileges or contraband, including cigarettes.Barber faces a 71-count indictment that includes third-degree rape.Prosecutors say the inmates were in jail on theft, prostitution and drug charges. They alleged that the women felt intimidated by Barber's advances because of his position at the jail. Yesterday, Barber's attorney argued that all the women were conspiring to make up their stories and noted they have filed a $10 million civil suit. Barber says he had a spotless record at the sheriff's department. The trial is expected to last about five weeks and prosecutors are expected to call some of the alleged victims to testify. If convicted on all charges, Barber faces up to eight years behind bars.Trial begins for jail guard accused of raping female inmatesLI corrections officer accused of raping inmates
