CORAM - A rally was held in Coram Wednesday afternoon to support the Caithness II power plant proposal.

Members of the Coalition for a Brighter Long Island were joined by union leaders and Brookhaven town officials to tout the plan to bring a massive 750-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant to Yaphank. Advocates say the project would create 500 jobs.

If the plant is built, the Longwood School District and the Town of Brookhaven admit they would rake in millions in tax breaks. Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro says the plant is about building Long Island’s infrastructure.

"There's a hosting benefit for every community that has a power plant," said Losquadro. "This is about having infrastructure and not buying this power from out of state."

PSEG Long Island has previously stated that the power plant is not needed.

In a statement, PSEG says Long Island will have enough power without the plant until 2020. They say there are no plans to reconsider the idea of building Caithness II.
