Rain wreaks havoc on Long Island

WOODBURY - Long Island residents who tried to travel by car during today's torrential rain had a tough time after several major roadways were shut down.

The heavy rains that started last night made parts of the island impassable. The Wantagh and Meadowbrook parkways were both closed for much of the day due to flooding but have now reopened.

The rain also affected mass transit and airports with the Long Beach and Far Rockaway LIRR branches being suspended and all area airports having major delays.

For Long Islanders who tried to stick it out at home, it wasn't much better. Parts of the Island received nearly a foot of rain leaving yards and basements flooded.Weather Center Watch News 12 Watch Traffic and Weather Submit Photos/Video
