MATTITUCK - A Long Island rabbi who just returned from Israel three days ago shared his experience amid the violence with News 12 Long Island.

Rabbi Elliott Spar, of Mattituck, says rockets launched between Israel and Hamas quickly became the norm during his visit. For Israelis, it's now a part of life as the conflict enters its fourth week.

“Everywhere you go, you have to go into a safe room. Every house in Israel has a safe room," Spar told News 12.

Spar says the recent FAA ban of American flights to and from Tel Aviv prevented him from escaping the chaos sooner.

The FAA lifted the ban on American flights to Israel on Thursday.

The State Department says Secretary of State John Kerry continues to work with his international counterparts to reach a permanent cease-fire agreement between Hamas and Israel.

The 20-day war has killed more than 1,000 Palestinians, 43 Israeli soldiers and two Israeli civilians.
